Breast Reduction

Superomedial pedicle with wise or vertical pattern incisions.

Breast reduction with Dr. Steffen

Dr. Steffen has extensive experience in breast reduction. Excess breast tissue is surgically removed, skin is taken in, and the breast is reshaped with the nipple lifted to its ideal position. The previous symptoms of macromastia resolve, and patients can take on life with new confidence and an improved proportion.

Technique

Dr. Steffen uses a superomedial pedicle and wise or vertical pattern skin incisions. Adjunctive liposuction is used on an as-needed basis, and the flanks are routinely contoured so the reduction fades naturally into the lateral thoracic trunk.

Coverage

Breast reduction may be covered by insurance when symptoms of macromastia (neck/back/shoulder pain, rashes, grooves from bra straps) are documented. Coverage is determined on a case-by-case basis with your carrier.

Insurance & coverage

Insurance coverage varies based on medical necessity and your specific plan. Coverage is verified during the consultation process.

Frequently Asked

Common questions about breast reduction.

Is breast reduction covered by insurance? +

Breast reduction may be covered when symptoms of macromastia — neck, back, and shoulder pain, rashes beneath the breasts, and grooves from bra straps — are well documented. Coverage is determined on a case-by-case basis with your carrier. Dr. Steffen's office helps navigate the pre-authorization process.

How much breast tissue can be removed? +

The amount is guided by your goals, anatomy, and — when insurance is involved — a minimum gram requirement set by your carrier. Dr. Steffen reshapes the breast with the remaining tissue, centering the nipple in its ideal position and resolving the weight that was causing symptoms.

What are the incisions for breast reduction? +

Dr. Steffen uses a superomedial pedicle with wise-pattern or vertical-pattern skin incisions. Adjunctive liposuction is used on an as-needed basis, and the flanks are routinely contoured so the reduction fades into the lateral thoracic trunk.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast reduction? +

Some women retain breastfeeding ability and some do not — it depends on the pattern of surgery and individual anatomy. If future breastfeeding is important to you, discuss it openly at consultation so it can be factored into the plan.

How is breast reduction different from breast lift? +

Breast lift (mastopexy) reshapes the breast and repositions the nipple without significantly reducing volume. Breast reduction removes excess tissue in addition to reshaping. The two share similar incisions but have different goals.
